SCP "Serves" The Community

The president has asked us all to contribute 4,000 hours of community service and the SCP is doing its part to help! We Click here for iCal filehave organized several joint happy hours throughout 2002 with various area volunteer groups that also host fun social events—so you can meet some of the groups that need your help while having a good time and meeting new people! Kind of a win-win situation, don't you think?

Join the SCP and Greater DC Cares for a joint happy hour, Thursday, February 7th, from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the New York Avenue Capital City Brewing Company (please note that this is not going to be at the Postal Square location next to Union Station) .

As seen in The Monthly Buzz, $5 cover charge (proceeds benefit DC Cares) includes $2.75 pints, 1/2 price appetizers, free soft pretzels, and entry into prize raffles.

Cap City is located at 1100 New York Avenue NW, just one block North of the Metro Center subway station on the Red, Orange, and Blue Lines.

Join the SCP and Hands on DC at the "Sand Bar" at Whitlow's on Wilson on Thursday, March 21st, from 6:00-9:00pm for a fundraiser to benefit local public school students. $5 cover charge gets you beverage specials, chips and salsa, and a chance to win a cool door prize; all money supports Hands on DC's 7th annual public school work-a-thon, which takes place Saturday, April 13th. Whitlow's is located at 2854 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, near the Clarendon Metrorail Station (Orange Line).

Coming soon: Stay tuned for details about our joint happy hour in April with Society Ties, and for news of other events still being cooked up (or at least microwaved). And check out our Links page for information about some select non-SCP events.

In 2001, the Capital Alumni Network's University Row (
CANUR) emerged as the dominant social locale along Gold Cup's popular North Rail.

In 2002, it will be the only place to be at the 77th Annual Running of the Virginia Gold Cup: CAN organizers expect to have at least 12 anchor tents—an increase of over 70 percent from 2001—including new tents from the University of Richmond, Boston College, Penn State, and the University of Notre Dame. More will be announced soon.

With the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop and with a bright Spring sun above, University Row played host last year to over 900 alumni and friends from over seventeen schools. A total of seven tents were anchored by the local alumni chapters of the College William and Mary, James Madison University, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Purdue, Wake Forest University, and the University of Texas, with participation from tent partners Arizona State University, Georgetown University, Hampden-Sydney College, NC State, University of Connecticut, University of Pittsburgh, University of Massachusetts, Penn State University, Georgia Tech, the University of Notre Dame, and other members of the Capital Alumni Network. This confederation of chalet tents was not only the largest CAN event, it was the biggest single gathering in the history of the Virginia Gold Cup.

CANUR is a 100% volunteer-run effort with no profit motive to feed and proceeds flow through to the non-profit alumni groups serving as anchors.
